ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
The year 2021 marks the 30th anniversary of English Studies at the Pedagogocal University of Krakow. Established in 1991, the then English Teacher Training College was the brainchild of Mariusz Misztal, who has been in charge of English Studies ever since. Misztal’s efforts to get the College off the ground were assisted by a triumvirate of avid English teachers: Maria Piotrowska, Mieczysław Lechowski and Jacek Bentke. They were all soon joined by other lecturers and tutors.
Over the years the College grew exponentially. This was reflected in the increasing number of students and more and more staff obtaining higher academic degrees. In 2003, as part of the Institute of Modern Languages, the English Teacher Training College was transformed into the English Studies specialisation and continued developing offering a model of integrated education which implied linking practical skills with theoretical knowledge.
In the course of time the English Studies specialisation has undergone a significant organisational restructuring while intensifying scientific research combined with the significant expansion of the educational offer as well as diversification and modernisation of the teaching process. All of these in accordance with the European standards provide a variety of Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes as well as numerous postgraduate courses.
Eventually, in 2020 a new and autonomous Institute of English Studies was established, heralding a resounding success and being a testament to the efforts of the directors and the staff of the Institute. Over the period of three decades, the English Studies have made significant progress evolving into a fully-fledged institution focusing not only on training future teachers, but also on ever developing research potential of its staff. Today the Institute employs 52 academics and educates over 600 students.
